Student organizations are a foundation for providing students with opportunities to apply and develop their classroom knowledge to the real world. Through these organizations students are able to experience positions of leadership and responsibility.
The primary student organization supported by the Department is the association of Information Technology Professionals. The organization was initiated in 1978 as a student chapter of the Data Processing Management Association (DPMA). In 1996, the name changed to the Association of Information Technology Professionals (AITP).
This organization provides CIS majors and other students with a wide variety of opportunities to set themselves apart. The chapters has monthly meetings that are open to all students with an interest in the area of technology. These meetings hose professional speakers from a variety of IT disciplines and many of them are alumni of the CIS program.
The chapter participates in two student conferences a year. In the Fall they attend the Region 3 Student Conference and in the Spring they attend the National Collegiate Conference. At each conference students participate in a variety of knowledge and skill competitions ranging from Microsoft Office solutions, to Systems Analysis, to JAVA programming.
Additionally the Student Chapter of AITP hosts an annual High School Symposium where area high school students are invited to the Texas State Campus to participate in competitions, speaker sessions, and campus tours.
Of special note is that the Student Chapter participates in the monthly professional meetings of both the Austin AITP chapter and the San Antonio AITP chapter.

Beta Gamma Sigma
is the preeminent honor society for business programs accredited by AACSB International, and the Texas State BGS chapter was established in November 1997.
Hispanic Business Student Association
Our mission as students of Texas State University-San Marcos, in order to serve as a center for the procurement of knowledge, is to foster communication with the McCoy College of Business Administration, create opportunities within the academic and the business community with the intention of developing proper business acumen, provide a medium for cultural enrichment, and encourage the pursuit of true and ethical ideals.
